The dice which you see are being used today look much different from their predecessors. Back then, dice were not uniform in appearance or even shape. If, however, we were to base the origin of the dice on the earliest records made about it, the much-coveted claim of dice invention shall belong to no other than the Egyptian civilization. Archaeological findings show evidence of the Pharaoh playing dice games with his ladies or even the spirits from the underworld similarly taking enjoyment from the game.
As time passed by, the game and appearance of dice naturally evolved. Dice were used for different purposes and in different situations.
Witch doctors apparently used dice to predict and foretell certain events and it was because of this that people used to believe dice were magical objects.
Dice games were also frequently used as a means to pass the time, especially during wars and when source of entertainment was severely limited for the soldiers.
Dice games also feature largely in historical events and there are unfortunately many cases where dice were used to determine the fate of wars and the lives of people!
As mentioned, the look of dice also gradually changed. The die as we know today actually originated from Korea and it was initially used in a Buddhist game simply known as Promotion.
As dice games became more advanced and sophisticated, so did methods of cheating. In fact, the glorious Roman Empire is notoriously known for having a lot of proficient cheaters in their midst. Nero, Augustus and Caligula are just some examples of famous Romans who happen to be famous for dice cheating as well!
